Creating a more sustainable and diverse place to work

Share

Ternium continues to work towards maintaining sustainable operations in the long term. This is demonstrated in the 2021 Sustainability Report, a complete discussion of its initiatives in areas such as environmental impact, gender equality and community development.

"Ternium, with its solid financial and competitive industrial and commercial positioning, is well placed for the challenges ahead," assures Paolo Rocca, Chairman, in his opening letter.

The company plays an active role in global efforts to address climate change. In 2021, Ternium was recognized for the fourth consecutive year as Sustainability Champion.

“At Ternium, we are committed to managing operations that protect our planet and have a positive impact on our communities. We are continuing to implement our decarbonization roadmap with numerous projects being deployed as planned, all with the goal of doing our part to mitigate the impact of climate change," says Maximo Vedoya, CEO of Ternium, in the report.

Excellence in environmental performance

To continue meeting the goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 20% by 2030, the company continues to promote initiatives such as expanding carbon dioxide capture capacity in direct reduction iron plant (DRI) processes, developing Ternium's Energy Efficiency Program and replacing metallurgical coal with biomass.

In 2021, the first phase of the process to increase CO2 capture and utilization at the Guerrero and Puebla plants was completed, achieving a total of 284 tons. This meant an increase of 34% compared to 2018 and is expected to reach a scope of 400 tons during the second phase of the Guerrero plant.

Regarding water, we continue to look for ways to reduce its use, especially in areas of scarcity. This year, 46% of the water intake in Mexico comes from third parties and is mainly sewage water. This water is treated at our plants to improve its conditions and then used in cooling processes and during different stages of the production process.

Looking ahead, we are studying solutions for CO2 storage and alternative uses by third parties. Moreover, the technology used in Mexico would support the use of green hydrogen as a replacement for natural gas.

Taking action in gender equality

Ternium continues to build a work environment where everyone's ideas, thoughts and perspectives are taken into account. Among its pillars are ensuring that all individuals have access to equal opportunities and are treated fairly.

This year, the number of women under 30 years old in our workforce increased 24% and female in managerial positions raised 19%. The talent attraction procedure was reviewed to increase the number of women in Global Trainee programs, and in addition, programs were created to improve work-life balance.

"I am deeply proud of the important work being done to advance our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs with the aim of fostering a diverse workforce and equitable working environment throughout our organization." –Maximo Vedoya

In addition, Ternium embraced the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) of the United Nations and was recognized for the second consecutive year as one of the best places to work for the LGBTQ+ community in Mexico, being the only steel company in that country within the ranking.

Helping our communities thrive

For years, Ternium has maintained support programs designed for each community in which its plants are located. In 2021, an investment of $17.5 million dollars was made to revitalize educational programs.

In July 2021, 118 students graduated as part of the third generation of the Roberto Rocca Technical School and six of them obtained the Roberto Rocca University Scholarship to continue their education.

Support for technical schools was also strengthened based on three pillars: modernizing infrastructure, providing additional mathematics courses for students and teachers, and increasing the number of courses offered through strategic alliances with other companies.

In Ternium's 2021 Sustainability Report you can also find information on actions and issues related to workplace safety, professional development, value chain, business plans, its position in the T-MEC and its commitment toward integrity.
