Two Churubusco, México, Teams Took the ENAD 2021

Share

The first two places were taken by teams from the Churubusco Plant.

For Ternium, taking care of the safety of all the people who work in the company or are inside its facilities is a paramount value.

The company holds an event annually where it rewards the best High-Performance Natural Teams (ENAD), in which groups, made up of employees from all plants, present safety improvement projects.

In the 2021 edition, the Churubusco Plant teams “A-0 Exhibitions” of the Hot Rolling Area of Hot Mill 3(MC3) and “Workshop safe hands: from disclosure to involvement” of Maintenance and Services of the Hot Mill 3, were left with the first and second place, respectively, of the ENAD.

The "A-0 Exposures" project aims to prevent the exposure of personnel to daily dangers due to workshop blindness. What was created as a simple project ended up being one of the most relevant initiatives of the ENAD 2021.

Through different activities implemented in all areas of the line, from the Furnace to the Coiler and the Grinding Workshop, they were able to reduce identified hazards.

For Josué Carreón, the quality inspector of the Hot Mill and one of the team members said that the most crucial challenge in this project was to change collaborators’ mindsets and the perspectives to implement new operational strategies along the lines.

The safety of all employees is one of the main points on Ternium's agenda.

“The hardest aspect was a change of perspective, but with the actions we took, they did change their way of thinking. It is a very important project for the people who work here. We should always look for the best and work safely”, said Carreón.

Alberto Zul, supervisor of MC3 and another of the members of “A-0 Exhibitions”, mentioned that it was a very rewarding experience due to the benefits obtained.

“Teamwork led us to this achievement. Without people’s brainstorming and their participation, it would not have been possible. People are happy because they will no longer be exposed to risk areas. We had an important result because people work with more confidence, you don't expose yourself, you avoid many dangers and people work with greater security”, he said.

On the other hand, there is the “Safe Hands Workshop: From Disclosure to Engagement” project, which aimed to reduce the risk factor and the exposure of the hands of the personnel in the different Maintenance and Services activities in the Hot Mill 3.

At the beginning of the project, the team brought plant personnel together to analyze the root causes of reported hand-related events, with the idea of raising awareness of injury risks, identifying areas of opportunity, and proposing best practices to reduce or eliminate risks.

From this exercise, 16 actions arose in the Coil Box, Reels, Tandem, Reversible Oven, among others, which allowed a reduction of the risk factor and exposure of personnel to accidents in hands and Serious or Fatal Injuries down to 71.1%.

Ternium has different initiatives, programs, and security protocols to take care of the well-being of all employees.

Ubaldo Leal, the mechanical inspector of Molino Reversible, pointed out that he is very proud of all the staff, as they understand the importance of safety at Ternium. An example of this commitment is the second place they obtained with this project in the ENAD 2021.

“The key was the commitment to safety because we must always take care of each other. You must always speak up in the face of unsafe conditions since everything is for the better. We must commit ourselves to security, the company, and our physical integrity”, he added.
