5 actions to protect our planet

Share

On Earth Day, we share some current initiatives to continue taking care of the communities where we are present.

At Ternium, besides the decarbonization route and the actions to take care of the environment, there are different action lines that follow a strategy against climate change. Among them, there are international initiatives to protect the plants and animals located around the mills.

Before the construction of any new building starts, the company does extensive fieldwork towards the preservation of biodiversity and carries a continuous control and vigilance program in areas destined to conservation in their steel and mining operations.

The company defines several areas of ecological connectivity between its land and the natural ecosystems, develops rescue programs to free wildlife in these areas, and installs connectivity doors for reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals.

These are some of the initiatives, did you know them?

1. Ternium protects 600 hectares of mangroves inside the Sepetiba bay, close to the Rio de Janeiro mill. In the same region, there is a collaboration with the project Botos de Sepetiba from the Biophysics Institute Carlos Chagas Filho and the non-profit organization Instituto Boto Cinza, which studies more than 30 animals among dolphins and whales.

2. We keep an alliance with Rewilding Argentina in a project at the Esteros del Iberá region to reintroduce species in danger like the yaguareté and the gigant otter.

3. Centro Industrial Pesquería has 99 hectares of ecological reservoir where 32,386 different kinds of plants have been rescued, as well as 681 of animals like birds, rabbits and coyotes.

4. After the greenfield project of Palmar de Varela in Colombia, a program of rescue and relocation of animals was implemented, which has moved over 1,200 animals among amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

5. In Mexico, since 2021 there has been an ongoing reforestation project at Planta Guerrero to increase the green areas. In the last 5 years, over 400,000 trees have been planted in the old mining operations in the country, which are located in the states of Colima, Jalisco and Michoacán.
