Features of Steel That Make It an Essential Material for Construction

Share

Steel is sustainable by definition, as it is 100% recyclable! It is one of the most renewable construction materials in the world, entering the circular economy cycle either as raw material or as input for other products. This significantly reduces the need for more resources and the generation of waste.

Additionally, it has a lower carbon footprint than concrete. It is also an excellent thermal conductor that helps improve energy efficiency by regulating the interior temperature of buildings.

But why is steel so special? Let us explain!

Versatility

Steel can be easily molded compared to other materials. For this reason, it is an ideal option to meet several architectural and structural needs. Thanks to its composition, it is possible to construct buildings that adapt to changing environmental conditions and make modifications that enhance spaces.

Examples include the Chrysler Building in New York, known for its impressive Art Deco design and the use of approximately 21,000 tons of steel in its construction. Additionally, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest skyscraper in the world, stands out for its ability to withstand the extreme conditions of the desert.

Durability

Structures made with this material are resistant to corrosion and natural phenomena such as earthquakes and hurricanes. Therefore, they have a long lifespan and require less maintenance over time. As a positive result, the use and generation of resources associated with construction are reduced.

For example, a steel bridge like the Golden Gate in San Francisco or the Brooklyn Bridge in New York can remain in excellent condition for over a century, even when exposed to extreme weather conditions or heavy loads.

Efficiency

Another benefit is that it is highly efficient in terms of time and resources. Its ease of handling and assembly speeds up the construction process. Additionally, it requires less personnel compared to other methods. This optimizes the workforce, reduces operational costs, and allows better control over project budgets.

At the same time, its lightweight nature favors transportation and handling on site. This generates significant savings in labor and other associated costs and causes less impact on the construction site.

Safety

The manufacturing of steel with proper quality control significantly reduces many of the safety risks present in production sites, such as injuries or falls caused by handling and assembly procedures. For this reason, it is one of the safest materials for any type of construction.

Moreover, it not only offers safety during the construction process but also over time. At Ternium, we have ideal products to provide buildings with the necessary stability, all in compliance with legal requirements.

The advantages of building with steel are countless! In addition to its quality in the construction sector and other industries, it is an indispensable ally on the path to a more sustainable world.
