Silos fabricated with Ternium’s smooth steel sheets in Guatemala

Share

Knowledge is the heritage three parents will leave to their children. Including their success to fabricate silos, a trade that was forged with effort, dedication, and the best steel in the market.

Different scenario, but in an apartment in Huehuetenango, Guatemala, these steel-related stories always happen. The main characters are Francisco, Humberto, and Palemón. They all have in common their love for their jobs and their families. As well as perseverance, and the spirit of entrepreneurship, an example that turns into a legacy when it is passed down from parents to their children. They looked for opportunities to improve on their own, doing what they do best and today, they are happy with themselves.

We visited the three workshops where the work environment is mixed with a family one: smiles and kind words go alongside the evident effort to make the best possible job. The labor is pleasant for the collaborators of said craftsmen; earning their bread goes hand in hand with sharing and learning alongside the man of the house.

Nothing stops them, on the contrary: the confidence of working with Ternium’s smooth steel sheets as a raw material propels them, and now it is part of their guarantee, as they said during an interview. These entrepreneurs tried different brands but, zinc detachment at the moment of casting, the quick weather-corrosion, and little adherence for welding discouraged them at the beginning of their paths. However, their enthusiasm returned when they tried Ternium’s sheets.

This product is cold-rolled and immersed in zinc. Afterward, it’s covered on both sides by a galvanized layer, which protects it from rusting and avoids particles release.

Contribution to food safety

During the pandemic, the conservation of corn grains has been fundamental to food safety. Especially in rural areas where 1 family out of 5 consumes ten quintals of corn per year, which is the same as a small silo, although medium and big silos are also fabricated. The success of this type of storage is to try to control humidity, air, temperature and light, according to an expert in agronomy. However, the good quality of the steel to fabricate the silos is fundamental, because the release of particles or rusting can deteriorate the corn, produce fungi, viruses, and bacterias that might spoil the harvest.

This is where the tour of the best silos fabricated in Huehuetenango ends. We invite you to watch the video.
