This new award emphasizes the company's environmental commitment to use renewable energy sources.
Ternium Atlántico becomes one of the most important clients of Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) as it receives the EPM Green Energy Label, which certifies that the energy used for the company's operations is 100% renewable green energy as it comes from the Porce III Plant, endorsing the company's commitment on using eco-friendly processes.
EPM is the first producer and marketer in Colombia that has this option available for its clients, so that they can get the "green" energy certification by using eco-friendly processes through the International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC).
"This solution is focused on large energy consumers who are committed with the society when it comes to sustainability. The company aims to offer this solution to other industries soon. More than 350 EPM clients of the unregulated marked have already gotten the service", explains Lina Salcedo, EPM employee.
When it comes to the company on Atlántico, the equivalent of the energy used on its manufacturing plants is generated with 100% renewable sources. EPM promotes this kind of certificates as a complement to their clients' social responsibility projects, such as the case of Ternium.
The EPM announcement signed by Fabio Andrés Rivera, Head of the Large Clients Sales Unit, states that: "The EMP Green Energy Label was created to support all the posts that are published by renewable energy corporate clients and shared to their interest groups, as part of its environmental commitment to promote the use of renewable energy sources".
The Benefits
Organizations that get Green Energy from EPM may report it on their annual inventory of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) or carbon footprint, which endorses their energy-related emissions as equal to zero.
With Green Energy, EPM fulfills the appeal in the Paris Agreement COP21 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, in which Colombia committed to get a reduction of 20% on GHG emissions by 2030, responsibility that will be transferred to all industrial areas, including the electricity sector.
Up to now, EPM is the only producer and marketer in Colombia that has this option available for its clients, so that they can get the "green" energy certification for the energy used in their processes.
