Ternium and World Auto Steel announced the winning team from Tecnológico de Monterrey, a competition to which design schools from all over the world were invited.
At the beginning of May 2021, Steel E-Motive from World Auto Steel launched an international styling contest directed to the best design schools around the world that are promoted by companies like Ternium that belong to this program.
Ternium promoted the School of Architecture, Art and Design of the Tecnológico de Monterrey for this competition, where institutions from the United Kingdom, Italy, the United States, Japan, among others, were also invited. The competition consisted on the exterior design of the vehicles of the future.
A team from Tecnológico de Monterrey made up of five students (four women and a man) and promoted by Ternium as part of its academic linkage actions, won this competition.

At an awards event, held on the campus of the university on October 27, George Coates, Technical Director of World Auto Steel & Steel E-Motive, personally recognized the young winners.
“When we develop an automotive program, we usually involve universities and technical institutions with expertise in engineering and design,” said Coates, “by involving young people we gain a fresh perspective, a new perspective on things. I think young people did a fantastic job to show what the vehicles of the future would look like in this project”.
As part of the award, members of the winning team will attend the Consumer Electronics Shows (CES) in Las Vegas in early January 2022.
This fair is one of the largest at an international level. Here, the latest developments in the world of electronics are presented, and assemblers and automotive companies attend to introduce their technological innovations.
In addition to the visit to CES, the design of the winning team will be shared with the consulting firm Ricardo, also belonging to Steel E-Motive, with the aim that they consider details for the exterior of the final vehicle.
The award ceremony was held on October 27.
In total, 30 young people from Tecnológico de Monterrey participated in this contest, divided into six teams. During the months of the competition, Ternium experts gave lectures and training to students to learn about the latest news and the importance of steel for the automotive industry.
“As there were no representatives from Latin America, at Ternium we promoted Tec de Monterrey because we knew that it has a very powerful designing team and all the tools to have a seat at the table of the best design schools in the world,” explained Juan Pablo Pedraza, Global Director of Research and Development at Ternium.
“The teams had to design the exterior of the vehicle, taking into account steel and its virtues in the design concept, as well as to demonstrate why they would use steel instead of alternative materials. In order to reach that design result, Ternium offered talks and conferences to students and professors on steel, the transformation of steels and advanced steels”.
Andrea García, a seventh-semester student of Industrial Design at Tec de Monterrey and one of the members of the winning team, highlighted the importance of participating in this type of program, as they encourage their academic and professional development.
“If we were able to do this right now, I can’t imagine what we will achieve later,” she said, “Ternium explained the project to us in detail and everyone who supported us was always very close to us for the development of this project.”
George Coates gave a lecture to the young participants on the importance of steel for the cars of the future.
José Pérez, Ternium's Talent Attraction analyst, highlighted that the recognition obtained by the students of that university is such an honor, as it is a sign of the company's commitment to promoting education in Mexico.
“From the first day we talked about the possibility of participating in this challenge, we knew it was a great opportunity to show that Ternium is a company that always seeks to innovate and be disruptive,” he commented.
