Ternium started with the operation of the new Environmental Monitoring Center at Rio de Janeiro´s industrial plant, investing in technology for data and environment indicators control and management. The monitoring center relies on 12 state-of-the-art high definition screens forming a video wall, in which environmental analysts split activities such as analysis and real-time management of parameter emissions of the 15 chimneys of the plant; analysis and management of air quality parameters of the monitoring stations; in addition to the constant surveillance of the process variables for effluents control.
Monitoring and data are evaluated even more efficiently, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. “The construction of the center shows how the environment is a top priority at Ternium´s agenda. We want to track up closely our operation and emissions to measure our environmental development and to find new ways to keep on improving”, said Titus Schaar, Vice President of Operations of Ternium Brazil.
Our environmental performance is shared with Inea (State Environmental Institute) permanently, continuously and automatically,” remarked Juan Manuel Yannaduoni, Environmental Coordinator. “The center allows us to optimize management and analysis of the information based on a better overview and a data platform. We have advanced substantially.”
The monitoring center has 12 high definition state-of-the-art screens that make up a video wall, where it is possible to track the parameters for emissions, air quality, etc.
Transparency since its conception
Juan shares that the project gives an idea of transparency right from its conception, being built with glass surrounding the structure, allowing anyone passing by to watch over the activities taken place internally.
According to Pamela Reis, Environmental Manager, this investment represents a vital step in environmental management and is aligned with Ternium´s vision of being recognized for its excellence. “The new Monitoring Center promotes larger transparency regarding environmental performance and reaffirms the commitment that Ternium has regarding this value. Everyone is invited to come to visit us. Doors are always open”, shared Pamela.
Marcelo Chara, president of Ternium Brazil, recalled that the construction of the monitoring center was a commitment undertaken by the company. “We are sure the environment has a leading role in our long-term agenda. We are a referral regarding the technology our plants have, and we also want to accomplish the same level of attention to the environment, with modern equipment and systems”, he pointed out.
Carlos André and Rafael Okamota are the “eyes” of the monitoring center.
For Chara, the location of the new monitoring center right at the entrance of the plant is strategic to let employees, visitors, and the community know that we search to be always transparent in our actions towards the development of the environment. “We need to work hard every day to obtain our license to operate within the community, and we are always focused on improving continuously,” he concluded.
What does the Monitoring Center allow to do?
- Monitoring and management in real-time of 74 parameters regarding gaseous emissions in 15 chimneys.
- Monitoring and management of 49 parameters of air quality from the three monitoring stations Ternium have in the community.
- Management of four cameras with Video Analytics monitoring fugitive emissions to the atmosphere.
