Ternium professionals participate in UFRJ’s 7th MetalMat Week in Brazil

Share

The decarbonization challenge and the future of green steel were the central themes.

Ternium was present at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s 7th MetalMat Week. As in 2020, the week took place online on November 29, 30 and December 1.

The event integrates students, engineers, professionals from the area, and teachers to conduct mini-courses and discuss the perspectives in the metallurgy and material engineering field in the country.

The paths for decarbonization and the future of green steel were the central themes of the lectures given by Ternium's associates, who at the end of the event awarded a student as the winner of the MetalMat challenge. The winner will be able to choose his area of interest and will have an Engineer’s Day at Ternium Brasil, visiting the plant and attending meetings with managers.

Four actions involved professionals from Ternium, who lectured mini-courses and spoke about the routine and importance of studies in the area in order to achieve a degree.

Student Matheus Murilo will live an Engineer's Day at the Ternium plant.

Ternium's participation in the event began with a mini-course on the production process, led by Raphael Colombo, Process Engineer at the Blast Furnace Unit, and Rodrigo Kubrusly, Coordinator of the Blast Furnace’s Technical Unit.

The second day of the event opened with the mini-course “Challenge and Future of Green Steel” with Ingrid Person, GEE and Energy Efficiency Consultant at Ternium, and Bruno Pinheiro, R&D Manager. The professionals talked about the path to decarbonization and the importance of collaboration between companies and public bodies.

“Our goal here is to recruit brilliant minds for energy transition and to seek near-zero CO2 in emissions from steel production. We hope to inspire you with our work, which is very important for the future, not only for industry but also for the future of the planet. Youth comes with everything to make this transformation. We need you to be together with us,” Ingrid said at the opening.

During the “Chat with HR”, Vanessa Antoine, Talent Acquisition & Development Manager at Ternium and Livia Petite, Development Manager, Talent Attraction, and Tenaris University from Tenaris, spoke about the work opportunities at the businesses, which belong to the same group. They also offered advice and showed the routes and programs available for those who want to join the company. The lecture was followed by over forty people, who were able to ask their questions about the recruiting processes and the professional profile that companies are looking for in the job market.

In the afternoon, the subject was the use of biomethane in Ternium's energy matrix. Marcos Antônio, Specialist Energy Efficiency Engineer at Ternium, together with Pedro Braga, Energy Trainee, and Mariana Alves, Environment Trainee, explained the operation of the Energy Management System at the Santa Cruz plant.

During the lecture, they talked about Energy Management ISO 50001 certification and detailed a little more the operation of the technology that uses biomethane from the Seropédica sanitary landfill. “Our world is changing, and we have the role to secure a future for the upcoming generations. If we do nothing, it will have a very big impact. We can change and transform this world. Together we can achieve higher levels, working together,” said Marco Antônio, speaking about the challenge of decarbonization and the use of renewable energy sources.
