Ternium announces plan to achieve a 20% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2030

The company will carry out projects in several plants to advance in its Decarbonization Plan.

Ternium announced the implementation of a decarbonization plan with the medium-term goal of reducing by 20% its carbon dioxide emissions by 2030. This plan will include an agenda of investments in eco-friendly projects and technologies.

"Climate change was a key subject in the Board's meetings, as we have been working on a plan to reduce CO2 emissions for some time now. All this work resulted in our first Decarbonization Roadmap with a medium-term goal of a 20% reduction of CO2 emissions per ton of steel produced by 2030", said Máximo Vedoya, CEO of Ternium, as he explained the initiative at a conference with analysts and investors on February 24th.

Progress in the decarbonization plan will include projects for:

  • Increasing the incorporation of renewable energy sources.
  • Increasing the use of scrap in the metallic mix.
  • Expanding carbon capture capacity at direct reduction facilities in Mexico.
  • Using charcoal instead of coal in the operations of Brazil and Argentina.
  • Prioritizing steelmaking technologies with lower specific emissions.

In order to decarbonize its operations, the company will continue to analyze and develop measures based on the disposal of raw materials, the appropriate infrastructure, and the corresponding regulations of the authorities.

"To better manage these matters, we recently reorganized the Environmental Department of Ternium by adding two different structures, one to deal with long-term strategic environmental decisions and another to oversee daily environmental issues", he added. Moreover, Ternium's Board chose a representative who will supervise the strategy against climate change on a quarterly basis.

“Carbon neutrality is a goal that can only be achieved if all parts of society work together. I truly believe that in the next few years there will be even more things we can do to improve our carbon footprint,” said Vedoya.
