Brazil: Ternium presents biomethane project at an industry event

Share

Ternium's Greenhouse Gases and Energy Efficiency Consultant Ingrid Person presented on Tuesday (9) afternoon, during a virtual event by the National Confederation of the Industry (CNI), the biomethane project used by Ternium at the Rio de Janeiro Industrial Center to produce steel and generate power. During the broadcast, CNI held a wide-ranging debate on segment initiatives in the decarbonization process. By using fuel of renewable origin from the degradation of solid municipal waste from the Seropédica landfill site, the company replaces part of the natural gas in the steel production and energy generation processes.

"It's a work of many hands. At Ternium, we have long sought to introduce renewable energy and decarbonization into our actions. We are taking advantage of biomethane to be used in the steel industry. Natural gas is a transition fuel that will help us reduce carbon emissions, but being able to have this renewable source gas is even better," said Ingrid Person.

“We are bringing sustainability not only to Ternium, but also to the city of Rio de Janeiro, in this unprecedented partnership between industry and the public authorities,” Ingrid explained.

During the Energy Transition panel held on the day dedicated to industry in the 2021 United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 26), the consultant explained that the compressed biomethane arrives at Ternium by truck, where the gas is decompressed and injected into the low-pressure line: “It is a challenge, but in these two years of operation with biomethane, we have already managed to prevent the emission of 30 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.”

At the end of her participation, Ingrid took the opportunity to highlight the importance of partnerships between industries, public authorities, and public policies: “Collaboration and partnerships are key. Only together will the world be able to unite to fight global warming. The steel industry makes the economy turn by producing steel, which can be recycled eternally. We can make this transition to low carbon by decarbonizing our processes and helping communities around the plants achieve sustainability,” she concluded.
